There is a date in the history of the Swiss Guard at the Vatican that binds deeply with the history of the Church, because it was marked by the blood of his sons 147: May 6, 1527, the Sack of Rome.
This date, which in 1527 was a date of death, today is a day of life, because every year on this day the new recruits make their solemn oath. It is a beautiful ceremony for the environment in which it takes place, the courtyard of St. Damaso, for the religious figure who presides over the Vatican and the thick ring of hundreds of people, political and military representatives of the Swiss Confederation, relatives, friends and supporters who assist you. The Guard is in full dress uniform, the last commander toady, and attracts the eyes of all: the band with his talented drum collecting sustained applause. The chaplain of the Police Act for the full text of the oath:
"I swear to serve faithfully, loyally and honorably the Supreme Pontiff John Paul II and his legitimate successors, and also dedicate myself to them with all my strength, sacrificing if necessary also my life to defend them. I assume this is the concern of the the Sacred College of Cardinals for the duration of the Vacant See. I promise also to the Captain Commander and my other superiors respect, fidelity and obedience. I swear. May God and our Holy Patrons assist me. "

Then the new recruits, called by name, and each come forward with your left hand on the flag of the Guard and raised his right hand with three fingers spread, as a symbol of the Trinity, confirm and swear:
"I,... I swear to observe faithfully, loyally and honorably in all that time I was this bed. God or his saints assist me."
It should be noted that among these saints, are implied in a particular patron of the Swiss Guard, namely S. Martino (Nov. 11), S. Sebastian (January 20) and S. Niklaus von Flue, "Defensor Pacis et pater patriae" (September 25).
At this point you should take a look at what is the normal course of a day of the Guards: every day, two thirds of its staff are committed to standing guard at the entrances of the Apostolic Palace, and that is in the Courtyard of S. Damaso, in the Cortile del Belvedere in the plans of the various lodges in the control room, outside the offices of the Secretariat of State in the private apartment of the Pope, in addition to external inputs, ie the gate Petra (former Holy Office), to ' Arch of the Bells, the Bronze Door and Port St. Anna. A serve of honor, order and control, the Guard is engaged whenever the Pope is present, ie in the liturgical celebrations in St. Peter in the General Audiences, visits of Heads of State, Heads of Government, Foreign Ministers and Ambassadors. The day is not occupied only by these official services, but the life of the Guard requires a series of inspections, instructions, marches, shooting exercises. Logically, we must find time for the many activities of their various groups, such as band, drums, choir, and you can not, then, not to mention football matches with other teams, such as that of the Police Force Vatican, table tennis and courses in self-defense. With all this physical activity and mental health of young people is relatively very clear that we need in the District of dishes that ensure the optimum welfare of the members of the Guard. This task is performed by the Albertine Sisters, Servants of God Finally, it is worth mentioning that all those who have served in any capacity with any degree, in the Swiss Guard at the Vatican, once the service are linked together through the 'ex-soldiers of the Guard Association, which regularly publishes the organ in Switzerland "DER EXGARDIST" members meet regularly at regional and federal level, and possibly participate in the latter case, the master and chaplain. The most important meeting, however, is what happens at the Vatican May 6 each year, during the swearing-in of recruits. Around them on that day become familiar in the Quarter Guard several hundred people: the families of current members of the Guard and a host of former guards and their families living with a day of fun, in true friendship.
